Identifying Amazon Linux instances and versions

AL2027 is currently available for preview. It is intended for evaluation and testing only and is not recommended for production workloads.
It can be important to be able to determine what Linux distribution, and what version of that distribution an OS image or instance is. Amazon Linux provides mechanisms to identify Amazon Linux apart from other Linux distributions, as well as to identify what release of Amazon Linux the image is.
This section covers the different methods that can be used, their limitations, and provides examples of their use.
